Effects of exercise training and a vegetarian diet on mineral status and plasma lipids in female runners

Effects of exercise training and a vegetarian diet on mineral status and plasma lipids in female runners

Nutrition Reports International 35(5): 1059-1072

Sixteen recreational female runners, aged 8-40 yr, participated in a study to assess alterations in iron and zinc status parameters and blood lipids in response to a 6-month physical training program combined with the institution of a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. Experimental (Exp) subjects (n = 8) participated in a progressive training program consisting of running that was gradually increased in distance and intensity. Control (Con) subjects (n = 8) maintained their prestudy running mileage. All subjects maintained a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet throughout the study period. No significant alterations were observed in plasma lipids, hemoglobin, hematocrit, plasma iron, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation, and plasma and erythrocyte zinc levels in either group. Plasma ferritin decreased (P < 0.01) for both Exp and Con subjects which appeared to result from institution of the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. An apparent trend in iron status parameter alterations suggested that the use of larger subject numbers and/or a training program of longer duration may have resulted in an exercise-induced deterioration in iron status.
