Effects of experimental modification of prolactin secretion on milk yield of cattle

Effects of experimental modification of prolactin secretion on milk yield of cattle

Monatshefte fur Veterinarmedizin 43(2): 48-52

Literature on the experimental modification of prolactin (PRL) secretion in cattle and its effect on milk yield is reviewed. Pre-partum inhibition of PRL secretion greatly reduced milk yield, and this was attributed to inhibition of the morphological and biochemical maturation of the mammary gland. When PRL secretion was blocked during lactation, however, milk yield was only slightly lowered and it was only slightly increased by a pharmacologically-induced rise in PRL release.
