Effects of farrowing house system and crate design on pig performance



Farm Buildings and Engineering 4(2): 21-24



Records from 391 litters were used to examine the effects on pig performance of 3 types of farrowing system and 2 types of farrowing crate. The 3 farrowing systems were in adjacent rooms of 12 crates and comprised a solid-floored straw-based system, a solid manure system with fully perforated raised floors and a slurry system with partially perforated floors. Two types of crate, with a straight or pronged bottom rail, were distributed equally between the rooms.
