Effects of feeding regime on energy allocation to reproduction in the silkworm Bombyx mori

The effects of restriction of feeding duration on food utilization and energy allocation for egg production by Bombyx mori are reported. Larvae restricted to feeding on mulberry for 6 h/day pupated after 11 days but those feeding for 12 and 24 h/day pupated after 8 and 7 days, respectively. Rates of consumption, assimilation, conversion and metabolism increased with an increase in feeding duration, as did ovary length, weight and egg number per female.
