Effects of freezing and drying on the solubility of organics and metals in arid soils

Effects of freezing and drying on the solubility of organics and metals in arid soils

Arid Soil Research and Rehabilitation 1(2): 97-113

In laboratory studies, the effects of freezing-thawing and wetting-drying on concentrations of contaminants in municipal solid-waste leachates were evaluated. Leachates from 1,000-L tanks loaded with solid wastes and leachate from a 15-year-old arid soil landfill were analyzed. The leachates ranged in age from 0.25 to 15 years. Levels of pH, total dissolved solids, organic carbon, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined.
