Since Jan. 1987, a mixed model procedure has been used to evaluate growth rate in Swedish dual-purpose bulls. The model includes the fixed effects of testing station, season of birth and breed, and the random genetic effects of sire, maternal grandsire and individual bull. Due to the large variation in year-season effects at most stations, breeding values are estimated using the deviations of daily gain from a station rolling average.
