Factors affecting culling and survival during rearing and first lactation in purebred and crossbred dairy cattle

Factors affecting culling and survival during rearing and first lactation in purebred and crossbred dairy cattle

Animal Production 46: 1-12

Factors affecting survival to 1st and 2nd calving and successful completion of a 1st lactation longer than 168 days were assessed in 3075 purebred and crossbred dairy heifer calves. Growth, disease frequency, reproduction, calving, and udder and lactation traits were examined in of a breeding project conducted jointly at 5 research stations (herds) of Agriculture Canada. Losses included mortality and non-discretionary culling.
