A site near Crossett, Arkansas was treated with Tordon 101 mixture or Garlen 4 in Sep. and burnt in Oct. 1983 and planted with Pinus taeda in Feb. 1984. The efficacy of preparing the site in autumn with herbicides was comparable in terms of hardwood control to that achieved with the traditional spring treatment. One year after treatment, relative leaf surface area of all hardwood species decreased significantly.
