Abstract
The vital contribution made by an optimal diet to intake, performance, health and fertility of high-yielding dairy and fattening cattle is stressed. Particular attention is given to adequate supply and quality, as well as economic importance, of structured basal feeds produced on the farm, including, apart from hay, pasture, freshly mown forage, hay, grass silage, preferably prewilted, and maize silage, prepared at an appropriate ripening stage. Increased use of concentrate resulting in an unfavourable roughage:concentrate ratio could impair performance and fertility.
