Fermentation of xylose and cellobiose by Pichia stipitis and Brettanomyces clausenii

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology 18: 325-338

Sulphur dioxide-pretreated aspen wood with hemicellulose sugars still in place was treated with cellulase and a mixed culture of Pichia stipitis and Brettanomyces clausenii. In a 48-h simultaneous saccharification and fermentation experiment, 384 litres/tonne dry wt aspen were obtained of which 90% was obtained in 24 h.
