First record of Sphaerospora renicola Dykova et Lom, 1982 and Myxobolus encephalicus Mulsow, 1911, pathogenic protozoans of carp from the USSR

First record of Sphaerospora renicola Dykova et Lom, 1982 and Myxobolus encephalicus Mulsow, 1911, pathogenic protozoans of carp from the USSR

Folia Parasitologica 34(3): 285-286

Of 15 Cyprinus carpio fry from ponds at Ropsha near Leningrad, examined in 1985, blood stages of Sphaerospora were found in blood preparations of 4 and in heart imprints of a further 6. Spores and/or plasmodia of S. renicola were found in 8 of these fish. M. encephalicus was found in 11 of the 15 carp. Both parasites are reported for the first time for the USSR. This work confirms that Haemogregarina cyprini from carp in the USSR described by Kudriasova & Naumova, 1978, was S. renicola.
