Foie gras: France fears competition from outside European Community countries

In 1986, two-thirds of goose foie gras consumed in France was produced in Hungary, Israel, Bulgaria and Poland. The decline in breeding of geese in France for foie gras production is discussed. It is attributed to high production costs, the fact that geese require thrice daily force feeding compared with 2 feeds in ducks, and a lack of criteria for defining quality of the product.
