French tour operators and intraFrance tourism

French tour operators and intraFrance tourism

Tour operateurs francais et tourisme intra France: 138

Initiated by the CECOD (Centre for the Study of Trade and Distribution), a specialized service of the APCCI (Permanent Assembly of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry) in France, the study focuses on the role and activities of French tour operators with regard to the distribution of French tourism products, describes the principal tour operators and the types of products, i.e., holidays, they offer, and provides information on current levels of distribution by region and future distribution potential of tourism products by travel agents. Although there is evidence that suppliers of accommodation, holidays and tourism services in France are able to cater for increasing demand, they continue to come up against the problem of distribution. Further, the importance of organized distribution networks in the form of tour operators, travel agents, as well as tourist and transport organizations is often underestimated. According to official statistics, it is estimated that, for example, travel agents account for 7%-9% of all commercialized holidays of four days or more taken by French people at home or abroad, and that this figure doubles when camping and caravanning are excluded. Distribution outlets therefore play a very important role in most forms of commercialized holiday organization. The study, covering the summer of 1986 and winter of 1986/87, is based on a survey of brochures and catalogues drawn up by French tour operators and available from travel agents, and centres on an analysis and comparison of a total of 2500 holiday packages which are contained in them. The work is supplemented with research carried out by several large distribution agencies and by statistics. Holidays are categorized according to three criteria: destination type, i.e., coast, countryside, mountains, towns; accommodation type; and types of leisure activities included in the holiday package. From the information obtained, the exact role and importance of tour operators and travel agents can be ascertained.
