Grasses. Persistence
When 24 Phleum pratense entries were grown in nutrient solution and in soil, those in nutrient solution grew more quickly initially, but repeated cutting favoured those grown in soil. There were marked genotypic differences in response to frequent cutting, with some showing a loss in vigour while others retained or increased their competitive ability. Dry matter production was closely correlated with tiller formation (r = 0.95).
