Grasshopper feeding rates, preferences, and growth on safflower

Grasshopper feeding rates, preferences, and growth on safflower

Annals of Applied Biology, 1111: 43-52

In laboratory tests, 4 species of grasshopper (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were fed on 4 safflower lines. When lines were presented singly the wet weight eaten did not differ between smooth and spiny lines, but 19% more of the late-maturing spiny line S208 was consumed than of the early spiny lines. The lowest wet weight consumption was of Seedtec-5, due, it is suggested, to its high fibre content.
