The effects of heat exchangers in livestock housing were studied. In housing with moderate insulation (coefficient of thermal conductivity, k, of 1.05 W m-2 K-1) heat exchangers only result in a negligible improvement in the heat balance. Supplementary heating is necessary for 10-kg piglets and 50-kg calves at outside temp. of < ca. 6 degrees C and permanently for fattening poultry weighing less than 0.3 kg.
