Abstract
Seeds of var. major cv. Aguadulce and var. minor cv. Manfredini were exposed to gamma -rays at 5 or 8 krad or to EMS at a concentration of 1.2% or 1.7% for 24 h. EMS was the more effective mutagen, giving a 2-4 times higher mutation frequency in both cultivars. Chlorophyll and morphological mutants were obtained, but they had reduced germination, survival and fertility compared to untreated controls. The morphological mutations included dwarfism, modified leaf shape and size and determinate habit.
