In vitro adhesion of K88ab-, K88ac- and K88ad-positive Escherichia coli to intestinal villi, to buccal cells and to erythrocytes of weaned piglets

In vitro adhesion of K88ab-, K88ac- and K88ad-positive Escherichia coli to intestinal villi, to buccal cells and to erythrocytes of weaned piglets

Veterinary Microbiology 15(3): 201-207

Using three serological variants of the adhesion antigen, K88ab, K88ac and K88ad, the existence of five different porcine intestinal adhesive phenotypes and 15 intermediate phenotypes in which adhesion with one or more of the K88 variant strains was incomplete, were demonstrated. The phenotype of 21 weaned piglets, concerning adhesion of E. coli possessing K88ab, K88ac or K88ad fimbriae to pig cells, was determined in an in vitro assay.
