A simple method of in vitro melanin deposition was used to clarify the role of haemocytes in the deposition of melanin on microfilariae of Brugia pahangi in Armigeres subalbatus. Experiments using heat-killed microfilariae indicated that melanin deposition could occur without the direct participation of haemocytes, though haemocytes may be involved in melanin synthesis.
