Increasing pregnancy rate in beef cattle by clitoral massage during artificial insemination

Beef Research Progress Report, Roman L Hruska US Meat Animal Research Center (2): 46-48

Increasing pregnancy rate in beef cattle by clitoral massage during artificial insemination

Data on 596 heifers and 1260 cows of 8 breeds were recorded. Females in oestrus were randomly assigned within breed, age and sire to receive either no massage or 3 s manual clitoral massage immediately after AI. Stimulation increased pregnancy rate in cows by 15% at 1st service (74 vs. 59%, P<0.05), but had no effect on the rate in heifers at 1st or 2nd services. Some technicians were more effective at stimulation than others.
