Increasing production and improving the nutritive value of basic feeds on the high mountain grasslands of Stogovo in Macedonia

Bellardiochloa violacea grassland at 1680 m alt. on Mt. Stogovo was given up to 320 kg N, 240 kg P2O5 and 160 kg K2O/ha or 20 t sheep manure providing 190 kg N, 70 kg P2O5 and 80 kg K2O/ha over the period 1978-1981. Applying 40 kg N + 60 kg P2O5 + 40 kg K2O annually increased herbage yields by 58%; the higher rates were uneconomic. Applying 10 t sheep manure/ha during the first 2 years increased yields by 63%.
