Inheritance of nitrate content in lettuce

In various tests in which 16 promising F2 populations (derived from crosses among 14 parents differing in nitrate content) and 3 F3 populations were compared with their parents and the standard Panvit under low-light conditions, nitrate content showed quantitative inheritance. The means of many F2s were significantly lower than their parental means, indicating dominance or epistasis. F2 heritability estimates were 18-69%, with values >50% in 14 out of 22 cases.
