Inhibitory effects of GA, 2,4-D and coumarin on root formation in leaf and stem cuttings of Phaseolus vulgaris

GA, 2,4-D and coumarin at various concn inhibited root formation in P. vulgaris cuttings. Inhibition with 2,4-D or coumarin was accompanied by a decrease in the activity of endogenous IAA whereas that with GA prevented IAA transport to the root formation zone. The inhibitory effects of 2,4-D and coumarin on root formation were due to growth suppression of the whole cutting whereas GA only suppressed the epicotyl.
