Insecticial activities of Piper guineense Schum and Thonn, and Capsicum species on the cowpea bruchid, Callosobruchus maculatus F

When mixed with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) seeds infested with adults of Callosobruchus maculatus, a powder of Piper guineense caused significantly higher mortality (P<0.05) of the bruchid populations within 48 h than when Capsicum annuum var. connoides or C. frutescens were used; the ground black pepper was also more active than whole fruits of P. guineense. The number of eggs laid by adult bruchids which had been in contact with the ground pepper was significantly reduced in comparison with the numbers laid by unexposed adults; the number of F1 offspring that emerged from eggs laid by pepper-exposed females was similarly reduced. None of the treatments adversely affected germination of cowpea seeds or the absorption of water before cooking or processing. The use of black pepper is considered to be an inexpensive means of protecting cowpeas in storage from infestation.
