Factors affecting the field emergence of peas relative to seed quality were studied in small-plot trials in 1981-83. At standard laboratory germination of 70-80, 80-90 and 90-100%, field emergence in 1983 was 64.9, 71.2 and 80.7%, resp., but laboratory germination did not predict field emergence as under poor conditions seeds of high percentage laboratory germination but low seed vigour as determined by conductivity showed poor field emergence.
