3 papers look at the legal, institutional and sociological factors in land degradation in Australia. Bradsen and Fowler discuss the legal issues and institutional constraints surrounding land degradation and make suggestions for change. The common law doctrine and its effect on the use of land for agricultural purposes is discussed and an analysis presented of the legislation on soil conservation and the land tenure system. The paper is reviewed by M. Barker.
