In an A. alba forest in the Massif Central, France, 95% of the needle biomass occurred in the top 8 m of the trees (total ht. 25 m). Needle characteristics depended on their distance from the top of the crown. Life span of needles showed a linear correlation with ht. Needle wt. decreased from the top to the base of the crown. It increased with age of needles for the first 4 yr, then remained constant.
