Data obtained in a long-term crop rotation experiment at Nagyhorcsok, Hungary showed that peas as a preceding crop increased grain yields of winter wheat in the first year and more so in subsequent years. N application reduced the difference in yield after peas and cereals but yields after cereals given 150 kg N/ha were still 0.5-0.7 t/ha lower than after peas. On plots deficient in N (0-50 kg/ha) wheat was the better preceding crop.
