Data from field trials east of the river Tisza indicated that medium maturity maize hybrids used 430-545 mm water in the growing season. Peak water demand was July to mid-Aug. when 200-250 mm water was required. On fertile chernozem, fertilizer application increased water requirements by 35-50 mm. Increasing plant density from 50 000 to 90 000 plants/ha increased water requirement by 50-70 mm. Irrigation increased grain yields by 2.68 t/ha.
