Of 26 A. triuncialis accessions whose chloroplast DNA (ctDNA) was analysed, 13 had the type 2a chloroplast genome derived from A. caudata, 8 possessed the type 3 genome of A. umbellulata and 5 contained a novel chloroplast genome designated type 2b. This differed from types 2a and 3 by an 0.3 kbp insertion and by 4 base substitutions, respectively. Accessions with type 2a and 3 chloroplast genomes were widely distributed and included members of both subspecies of A. triuncialis (subspp. eu-triuncialis and orientalis), but those having the type 2b chloroplast genome were found only in the Azerbaijan SSR.
