Monitoring the reproduction of cows by direct radioimmunoassay of progesterone in serum and milk

Monitoring the reproduction of cows by direct radioimmunoassay of progesterone in serum and milk

Acta Veterinaria Hungarica 35(4): 383-390

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique was developed by the authors for determination of progesterone in bovine serum and pooled foremilk obtained at the afternoon milking. The method was found suitable for monitoring the bovine oestrous cycle and its changes (successful and unsuccessful insemination, fetal death). The presented cases of ovarian dysfunction illustrate that knowledge of serum and milk progesterone concentration renders possible to monitor the reproductive status of cows and may serve as a basis for the correct administration of hormone preparations.
