Phenotypic patterns in somaclones from plants regenerated from somatic cell culture of IR lines

Families of plants regenerated from somatic cell culture of the rice varieties IR36, IR50, IR52 and IR54 were classified in the second clonal generation into 4 groups on the basis of the following phenotypic patterns and somaclonal relationships with their donor parents: (1) no segregation within family; similar to parental type (SPT); (2) no segregation within family; dissimilar to parental type (DPT); (3) limited segregation for 1 or 2 traits; and (4) >2 traits segregating simultaneously. No significant differences were found between SPTs and donor variety; DPTs and donor differed significantly for 10 yield-related and morphological traits. However, each DPT population showed within-family uniformity. The variation coefficient of all traits was less in the DPTs than in the donor, indicating that the DPTs were homozygous.
