The Fell Sandstone in north east Northumberland forms a belt of distinctive high ground covered by extensive heathlands, associated with a range of podzolic soils, some of which are uncommon elsewhere in England and Wales.Recent detailed soil survey has shown that humus-ironpan stagnopodzols and stagnogley podzols are widespread, associated in a catenary sequence with raw peat in the lowest parts.
