Quantitative and qualitative aspects of the parasite burdens of rock dassies (Procavia capensis Pallas, 1766) in the Mountain Zebra National Park

, : Quantitative and qualitative aspects of the parasite burdens of rock dassies (Procavia capensis Pallas, 1766) in the Mountain Zebra National Park. South African Journal of Zoology, 222: 101-106

The parasite fauna, including ectoparasites (10 species of ixodid ticks, 4 species of Anoplura, 2 species of Mallophaga and the flea Procaviopsylla creusae) and endoparasites, was studied in a total of 77 Procavia capensis (6 per month were shot in a National Park in Cape Province on 13 consecutive months in 1980-81). Female dassies had higher densities of biting lice during the summer than the males and juveniles had higher ectoparasite densities than adults, except for biting lice.
