Relative cold tolerance of Russian wheat aphid and biotype-E greenbug (Homoptera: Aphididae)

Relative cold tolerance of Russian wheat aphid and biotype-E greenbug (Homoptera: Aphididae)

Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society 611: 137-140

The cold tolerance of Diuraphis noxia and biotype E of Schizaphis graminum were compared on wheat in field cages in Kansas in 1986-87. The survival time at 0 degrees C, -10 degrees C and -20 degrees C was determined in the laboratory for both species. D. noxia survived the 1986-87 winter (1.9 degrees C above normal), which was fatal to S. graminum. Generally, D. noxia survived better than S. graminum at all temperatures in the laboratory.
