Response of laying hens to mash and pellet diet portions containing various nutrient combinations

Pullets were fed two diet portions: one supplied the major portion of the daily protein and energy requirement and was fed in mash form while the other supplied the major daily calcium requirements and was fed as pellets. The diets were mixed in a 80:20 ratio (protein:energy diet versus calcium diet) and offered to the hens ad-libitum. Various additions were made to the diet portions to see whether composition of the diet portion was an important consideration influencing intake as compared to absolute daily nutrient intake. While there was little difference in response to the various treatments, it was of interest to note that the four diet treatments resulting in the greatest egg mass also resulted in the greatest consumption of energy, serine and with three of the four diets, sulphur amino acids. A comparison of hen performance at 32 and 56 weeks of age suggests that for a large number of laying experiments little is to be gained from continuing studies beyond approximately 30 weeks of age.
