Rice chloroplast DNA molecules are heterogeneous as revealed by DNA sequences of a cluster of genes

The isolation is described of 2 HindIII fragments (9.5 and 5.3 kb) each containing a gene cluster coding for the large subunit of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL), the beta and epsilon subunits of ATPase (atpB and atpE) and 2 tRNAs (trnM and trnV). All 5 genes in the 9.5 kb fragment were potentially functional, but in the 5.3 kb fragment rbcL was truncated and atpB had undergone a frameshift mutation.
