Rice for the terraces: cold-tolerant varieties and other strategies for increasing rice production in the mountains of Southeast Asia

The rice-based farming systems of Banaue, Ifugao, in the Philippines were studied in depth. Patterns of household organization reflect differences in resource bases. Cash-generating enterprises are important and profitable. Returns average P(Pesos) 18 per day, almost twice the minimum wage. Rice production is labour intense (400 days/ha), fairly production (3.1 t/ha) and provides modest earnings (P9/day). Rice crops are managed for high panicle weights.
