Abstract
Nitrate reductase (NR) deficient mutants were selected from protoplasts on medium containing chlorate. The spontaneous mutation rate was 0.2-5.0 x 10-5 vs. 2.4-7.1 x 10-5 following irradiation with 1.4 krad gamma rays. The regenerated clones were all deficient in NR activity and were classified biochemically as nia (NR apoenzyme deficient) or cnx (Mo cofactor affected). Genetic analysis (following grafting to N. tabacum) identified one nia gene (recessive) in the mutants and 6 cnx genes (A-F).
