Significance of chemotactic activity for placental expulsion in cattle

Chemotactic activity in placentomes sampled from 74 healthy Holstein-Friesian cows was determined immediately and 3 h after parturition. Times of placental expulsion were recorded. Cows hospitalized 3 h before parturition showed a high correlation between chemotactic activity and time of placental expulsion immediately after parturition (r = -0.78). This correlation was less marked in cows that had been transported sub partu (r = -0.61). Only low chemotactic activity could be detected in animals with retained placenta.
