The effects of herbicides on the photosynthetic apparatus, including the inhibition of electron transport between PSI and PSII, the inhibition of ATP formation, alternation of carotenoid and chlorophyll synthesis and the peroxidation of chloroplast components are reviewed. The use of herbicidal inhibitors in the study of chloroplast function is discussed.
