Socio-economic differentiation in a mature collectivised agriculture: North Vietnam

Socio-economic differentiation in a mature collectivised agriculture: North Vietnam

Sociologia Ruralis 27(2/3): 197-215

The paper examines processes leading to systematic socioeconomic differentiation in the full-collectivized rural areas of Communist North Vietnam in the mid-1970s. It distinguishes between 'primary' and 'secondary' differentiation, attributing the first to variation between cooperatives in the degree of implementation of official policy, and the second to interpersonal differences within a given cooperative. Three basic cooperative types are identified, 'nominal', 'active' and 'model'.
