Studies on inheritance of yield, yield components, and protein content in wheat

Estimates of general and specific combining ability and heritability in the parents, F1s, F2s and F3s from 7 crosses involving 2 high-protein and 4 low-protein lines provided evidence of epistasis for grain protein content, of significant non-additive genetic effects plus additive effects for plant height, of important additive effects for 100-grain weight, of significant general combining ability effects for number of grains/spike in the parents Penjamo and Mara and of both additive and non-additive genetic control of yield/plant. Delay of selection for yield until the F3 or F4 is recommended.
