139 sows were given supplements of vitamin A and D3 by injection, in cod liver oil, or as carotene in feed, totalling 1 800 000 IU, 7000 000 IU and 1400 mg resp. in winter/early spring, 1 800 000 to 3 000 000 IU, 700 000 IU and 1400 mg in summer, and 2 400 000 to 3 000 000 IU, 700 000 IU and 1400 mg in autumn. The treatment was administered for 7 days before mating, and for 3 wk before farrowing.
