The control of salivary gland degeneration in ixodid ticks is mediated by a 'tick salivary gland degeneration factor' which is probably an ecdysteroid. Others have suggested that vitellogenesis may also be controlled by ecdysteroids. The ecdysteroid inhibitor, azadirachtin, was injected in doses up to 100 micro g/g into engorged females of Amblyomma americanum to test whether it would inhibit salivary gland degeneration and vitellogenesis.
