The extension system and small-scale farmers: a case study from Northern Zambia

The extension system and small-scale farmers: a case study from Northern Zambia

Agricultural Administration and Extension 26(4): 185-196

In much of northeastern Zambia, traditional systems of agriculture based on shifting cultivation (citimene) are giving way to semi-permanent cultivation centred on hybrid maize. Empirical data from three districts of the northern and central provinces shows that government extension has played a major role in the transfer of knowledge about new agricultural techniques. Nevertheless, its coverage is uneven and a considerable number of farmers remain entirely outside the formal extension system.
