The honeybee queen and the social organization of her colony

The honeybee queen and the social organization of her colony

Experimental behavioral ecology: 343-357

Knowledge about the complex mechanism by which the queen dominates worker honeybees is reviewed, with 83 references. The main factors involved are the pheromones produced by the queen and the biophysical mechanisms for distributing them. Responses by workers include retinue behaviour, queen rearing, and development (or lack of it) of worker ovaries. Learning appears to play a major role in the responses. Various grades of laying workers can be recognized.
