The impact of irrigation

The transformation of land by irrigation includes surface changes as a result of land clearance and levelling, construction of furrows etc.; and in-depth changes resulting from the alteration of the water balance, including four deleterious transformations: waterlogging; salinization; seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers and rivers; and land subsidence. Examples from Pakistan, Israel, Thailand and Arizona are described.
