The rearing and maintenance of ixodid and argasid ticks in the laboratory

The rearing and maintenance of ixodid and argasid ticks in the laboratory

Animal Technology 39(2): 99-106

In this paper we describe a variety of methods employed in our laboratory for breeding ticks. Colonies of four tick species (two ixodids and two argasids) are maintained using vertebrate hosts, membrane feeding or capillary feeding. The feeding behaviour and life cycle of the different tick species in the laboratory are discussed.
