Thinning trials in the black pine stand of Monte della Modina in the Tuscan Apennines

Thinning trials in the black pine stand of Monte della Modina in the Tuscan Apennines

Annali dell' Istituto Sperimentale per la Selvicoltura, Italy 14: 101-147

A study was made of a pure P. nigra stand planted around 1930 for soil protection, which had not been thinned since planting. Diam. increment reached an early peak and showed that the stand should have been thinned before age 25-30 yr. Thinning from below, removing 30% of the trees (18% of standing vol.) was carried out in 1976. Seven years after thinning, there had been no effect on natural regeneration of P. nigra but there had been an increase in regeneration of beech and oak.
